Grants and Scholarships - The SRGC awards annual scholarships to students majoring in horticulture, environmental studies, natural resources, or viticulture at Santa Rosa Junior College and at Sonoma State University.
Dean Linscott Memorial Garden - Year-round the SRGC maintains the showcase garden at the rear of the parking area of the Luther Burbank Art & Garden Center on Yulupa Avenue. Special workshops are held in the Spring and Fall for upkeep of the garden.
Over the winter 2022-23 the Garden Club members will be pulling out plantings and preparing them for the April Plant sale. A new garden will be completed by April 2023 using plants appropriate to our water-wise environment. Watch for it! |
Arbor Day Tree Planting
Each year, the club purchases and arranges for the planing of a tree to commemorate California Arbor Day on March 7, Luther Burbank's birthday. In 2018, the trees were delivered in time for National Arbor Day and Earth Day in late April.
Two schools whose grounds suffered badly from the October received trees. Schaefer Elementary School received an espaliered Fuji apple tree, which went into their edible garden, and can be harvested in the late summer when the students are on campus. Riebli Elementary School received a Chinese Elm shade tree for the area occupied by their youngest students. We thank Urban Tree Farm for their generous support of this project. |
Community Gardens - As recognition to the importance of community gardens in the area, the Santa Rosa Garden Club allocates a sum each year for their support. In 2018, Schaefer Elementary School and Riebli Elementary School each received funds to replace tools and equipment used in their students' vegetable gardens which were destroyed in the October wildfires.
Penny Pines/Reforestation - The purpose of these programs is to replant areas devastated by forest fires. CGCI adopted this program in 1957, and over the years groups have contributed over a million dollars to these reforestation efforts. At the monthly SRGC meetings, members and guests have an opportunity to contribute to this program. More information can be found at Penny Pines Project.
Blue Star Memorial - In June 2014 the Santa Rosa Garden Club purchased and placed a Blue Star Memorial Byway Marker in a special veteran's section at Santa Rosa Memorial Park in Santa Rosa.
Luther Burbank Home & Garden and Luther Burbank Art & Garden Center - In 2015 the Santa Rosa Garden Club donated funds to install a birdbath in the garden area at the Home & Garden site. As a memorial to long-time members, the Club donated and planted a Maple tree in the patio area of the Art & Garden Center.
