October 27, 2025 Radical Root Care
Presented by: Curtis Short

The Radical Root Care lecture and slide presentation will be helpful to anyone who is interested in growing trees or shrubs (since trees are essentially big shrubs on a trunk), or to anyone who simply interested in how woody roots grow and how to better manage soils for root health. We’ll look at root system structure so we can tailor practices to match root needs.  We will look at poor planting methods that stunt roots, and inappropriate  soli coverings that suffocate roots. We’ll talk about why you should avoid phosphorus fertilizer, how to best grow mycorrhizal soil fungi, and were to set irrigation outputs.  In the end, you will leave well equipped to make better root care choices.

Curtis Short received his Bachelor of Science degree in Plant Science with a Plant Pathology emphasis from U.C. Davis in 1986 and completed several courses in Landscape Architecture at U.C. Berkeley Cooperative Extension in San Francisco in during the early 90s. Curtis has been a licensed California Landscape Contractor since 1989. He became an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist in 2018 and his business is called Curtis Short Expert Pruning.

February 23, 2026 - Singing Frogs Farm
Presented by Elizabeth Kaiser

Through their innovative, regenerative farming systems which include no-till still management, they have more than quintupled the organic matter and carbon in their soil.  These practices have resulted in the production of six times the average harvest revenue per acre per year. Less water is used for vegetable production and they use NO sprays of any kind. They are also able to keep their crew of employees year round.

Singing Frogs Farm works with Mother Nature to create an ecological balance in which pests are not a problem. Perennial plantings, including hedgerows provided habitat for the beneficial insects to prey on pests.
