September 23, 2024 - Water Features for Your Garden (Horticulture & Conservation) Presented by: Sabrina Howell
Sabrina notes "as a child, there was always wild water to muck about in." As an adult, Sabrina received a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy. While raising her children she rediscovered her passion for ponding and built and maintained several types of backyard water features. She studied Horticulture and Sustainable Landscaping, became a Certified California Naturalist, and a trained and experienced School Garden Teacher, providing workshops and consultations for the US Fish & Wildlife's Schoolyard Habitat Program. Wild Toad Nursery was a small nursery that she operated until health issues necessitated significant life changes. Sabrina recently moved to four acres with a surprising variety of wildlife where she installed an emergency "South Puddle" to fend off last summer's 100 degree heat and has amazing results to share.
There is something magical about the sight and sound of water- a joy for humans and a necessity for wildfire. A homeowner can make a tremendous impact with even a small water feature. Sabrina will share her experience on creating a water feature that is safe for wildlife, mosquito free, low maintenance, and a complement to a home garden. The program will address algae control, low water use, a variety of DYI water features and the need to be high maintenance "water hogs" or mosquito hatcheries. Adding the much allure and music of water to a backyard can be easily done.

November 25, 2024 - The Redwood Empire Bonsai Society (REBS): Styling A Stock Juniper Bonsai (Horticulture) Presented by: Ivan Lukrich
Ivan Lukrich became interested in bonsai after visiting an annual bonsai exhibit at a Buddhist Temple in Watsonville, CA and winning a small tree as part of a door prize. The trees in the exhibit appealed to Ivan and he furthered his interest in bonsai. Ivan moved to Santa Rosa in 1985 and joined the Redwood Empire Bonsai. He participated in beginner classes offered by club members, participated in workshops offered by senior members, and visiting bonsai experts. Ivan joined the REBS board as a member and served a couple of times as president. Ivan also participated in class to be certified as a bonsai instructor. Ivan teaches beginner and intermediate bonsai classes.
For the presentation, Ivan plans on styling a nursery stock juniper, like what they offer at beginner classes. If time allows, it will be repotted from the nursery container to a bonsai pot.
